No clear information about the trails, so let me help…

We took all three routes in one hike - it took us approximately 7-8 hours! If you want to follow only one hiking trail, I highly recommend you to skip the trail hike with the car gate (it’s longer, took us 2-3h, 10.4km back and forth, and brings you quite far from the crater). Take one of the two trails on left/western edge of the parking instead.

Out of these two, one takes you to the hills (which is more tiring and challenging but gives you a great view on the solidified lava), the other one goes behind the hills so you only see the solidified lava at the end of the trail (but it’s easier and the path is mostly smooth). These two trails form a loop, so you can choose one for the way to the crater and the other one for the way back to the parking.

At the end of both trails, you arrive at what looks like a solidified lava beach. You can either go up a hill to have view of the crater, or take the path around that hill to get closer to the crater. I recommend you to directly start walking on the solidified lava instead of taking the path on the side of the hill (it’s easier and more fun).

But be careful because the closer you get to the crater, the more brittle the solidified lava. So it might break as you step on it. You can either tap a bit with your leg to test if it’s solid, or run!

i join the local tour with a group of 30people. We spend about 2hours 1 way to the crater, just because a lot of waiting and counting of people.

the road should be getting better and easier to walk as they keep building a proper trail.

Worth the trip, even in not so good weather. Do not expect active lava any more but there’s still steam coming out of the magma.  Nice hike that you can make as long as you want almost. Already at the start the site is spectacular. The routes are well marked

Fagradalsfjall Volcano

Lovely little Chapel in the middle of vast valley with mountains from west and north and ocean on the south side. Road completely accessible, small parking in the proximity and complete silence and emptiness.

We stopped here on a very windy, rainy and foggy day. we couldn't see the mountains but it added to the atmosphere of the place. Worth a quick stop but you can't go inside.

charming place with history.  Unfortunately, the facility itself is closed, but it is worth stopping for a while on the way to Krysovick and seeing this wooden facility.

Nice view of the lake. In warm days it's possible to swim.

Road 42 takes you from the south coast to North.The lake with its impressive vies and black sands makes the scenery  look mysterious

UNREAL PLACE. Just absolutely beautiful. Breathtaking. The view from this car park is beyond the prettiest thing I've ever seen. It was covered in snow the lake looked like crystals and glass at the edges. If you want to see a nice view in Iceland ide definetly not miss this on a clear day.

Lake Kleifarvatn Car Park

I love this place. Takes about 30 min to get here from Reykjavik but feels like another planet. Lots of really interesting and fun geothermal action here, and you can get up close and personal with it. Highly recommend!

Although its quite small it’s a nice place to visit. It’s definitely less touristic than the one near Myvatn and the parking is free here. Its a short 10-15 min walk around the whole area and you get the chance to read some facts.

Overall a nice experience and good place to combine with Graenevatn + the surrounding area!

Great place to see and walk amongst colourful geothermal hot springs on the Reykjanes Peninsula. I visited on a cool, wet and windy day in June, after stopping to see the lake nearby, so didn't stay long as I didn't have full rain gear on.
