La Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore è l’edificio più importante della Piazza (e di Bergamo) e deve la sua costruzione a un voto contro la peste fatto dagli abitanti nel 1133.
 Costruita nel 1137 si caratterizza per la mancanza di una porta d’ingresso sulla facciata centrale, compensata, però, da quattro splendide porte di accesso laterali. A sinistra si apre la porta con protiro dei Leoni rossi e a sinistra di questa, a ridosso dell’abside, l’ingresso secondario. Una curiosità: Piazza Duomo è sempre stata piazza di commerci, quindi tra le due porte sono ancora visibili nel muro le antiche misure di Bergamo: il Capitium Comunis Pergami (cavezzo – 2,63 metri) e il Brachium (braccio – 53,1 cm) a cui i commercianti di tessuti della piazza dovevano rigidamente attenersi per le misure. Le altre due porte sono quelle dei Leoni bianchi con un protiro di Giovanni da Campione e la Porta della Fontana accanto alla Fontana di Antescolis.

A differenza delle comuni meridiane che è possibile vedere in giro per l’Italia, come quelle di Monclassico, la meridiana di Bergamo non è dipinta sulle mura della città ma sul pavimento
È inoltre detta “a camera oscura” perché a indicare la posizione del sole rispetto alla terra non è l’ombra, ma un raggio di luce che penetra in un ambiente buio attraverso un foro ricavato in una lastra che può essere di metallo ma anche di un altro materiale collocato al posto giusto (solitamente in alto rispetto al pavimento cui giunge il raggio solare).

Proprio questa sua caratteristica giustifica la scelta del luogo in cui si trova perché, all'epoca della sua costruzione, il fianco occidentale del palazzo era chiuso da mura che garantivano alla zona una discreta ombra, dunque adatta a raccogliere l'immagine del Sole prodotta dallo gnomone che fu collocato fin dall'inizio sopra la volta della loggia.

Meridiana Monumentale

Da 120 anni le funicolari attraversano le mura di Bergamo, collegando il centro moderno al cuore medioevale della città. Vista superba durante il tragitto, quando si riaprono le porte sei già innamorato di Bergamo.

Un piccolo rito portafortuna: sulla cancellata della Cappella Colleoni c’è uno stemma raffigurante gli attribuiti del condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni. Sono tre e sono ben lucidi... si dice che sfregarli porti grandi soddisfazioni!

In realtà il capanone si chiama Torre Civica. Con i suoi 53 metri di altezza è una delle più alte d’Europa nonché simbolo di Bergamo. All’ombra del Campanone si è svolta la vita della città per 1000 anni: le campane della torre hanno suonato per l’arrivo, la partenza, il matrimonio e la morte degli imperatori.

The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore is the most important building in the square (and in Bergamo) and owes its construction to a vote against the plague made by the inhabitants in 1133.
 Built in 1137, it is characterized by the lack of an entrance door on the central facade, compensated, however, by four splendid side access doors. To the left is the door with a prothyrum of the Red Lions and to the left of this, close to the apse, the secondary entrance. A curiosity: Piazza Duomo has always been a commercial square, therefore the ancient measures of Bergamo are still visible in the wall between the two doors: the Capitium Comunis Pergami (cavezzo - 2.63 meters) and the Brachium (brace - 53.1 cm ) to which the textile merchants of the square had to strictly adhere to for measurements. The other two doors are those of the White Lions with a porch by Giovanni da Campione and the Porta della Fontana next to the Antescolis Fountain.

Unlike the common sundials that can be seen around Italy, such as those of Monclassico, the Bergamo sundial is not painted on the city walls but on the floor
It is also called "camera obscura" because it is not the shadow that indicates the position of the sun with respect to the earth, but a ray of light that penetrates into a dark environment through a hole made in a plate that can be made of metal but also of another material placed in the right place (usually higher than the floor where the sun's rays reach).

Precisely this characteristic justifies the choice of the place where it is located because, at the time of its construction, the western side of the building was closed by walls which guaranteed the area a discreet shade, therefore suitable for collecting the image of the Sun produced by the gnomon which was placed above the vault of the loggia right from the start.

For 120 years, funiculars have crossed the walls of Bergamo, connecting the modern center to the medieval heart of the city. Superb view during the journey, when the doors reopen you are already in love with Bergamo.

A small lucky ritual: on the gate of the Colleoni Chapel there is a coat of arms depicting the attributes of the leader Bartolomeo Colleoni. There are three of them and they are very shiny... it is said that rubbing them brings great satisfaction!

In reality the shed is called Torre Civica. With its 53 meters of height it is one of the highest in Europe as well as a symbol of Bergamo. The life of the city for 1000 years took place in the shadow of the Campanone: the bells of the tower rang for the arrival, departure, marriage and death of the emperors.
